a full dress winter hike.
mansfield in the snow.

set out and almost neglected to bring my snowshoes. knew for certain that i'd need crampons, but who would have thunk. must have been up to 8 inches of snow up top.
and son of a gun. i had forgotten how much more work it takes trudgin through snow.
think sunset ridge took appx 5 hours, from the lower pull off. couldn't make it to the parking lot proper cause it was just too slick. at one point i was sliding awry down the hill. fortunately i didn't stitch myself up too, too badly and was able to head down in reverse, hit a place to right the ship, and nestle in to the lower pull off, about .75 miles from the gate.

albany last night for the springsteen show.
i'll add a couple things, but this from backstreets.com. should give ya an idea as to just how friggin psyched i was.

Notes: A stunner of a setlist, and a start-to-finish smoking performance to match. First of all, the "Reason to Believe"/"She's the One" sandwich was a double-decker, with both "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "Candy's Room" in the middle -- cool on paper, and incredibly powerful in performance. But it wasn't the jaw-dropper of the set. For that, we direct your attention forward a few songs, to what Bruce called a "double shot from Wild & Innocent!" It was a passionate "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" into "The E Street Shuffle," both rarities in their own right, and back-to-back like this we're talking hen's teeth. This was a crowd that appreciated what they were getting, too. For "Sandy," it was spotlight on Danny Federici, literally -- Phantom Dan was bathed in light as he stepped out from behind the organ for some beautiful accordion playing. "Sandy" was last played at Giants Stadium in 2003, but for the last E Street Band performance of "E Street Shuffle," you've got to go back to the end of the reunion tour, July 1, 2000. In the encore, Springsteen dedicated "Thunder Road" to Matty Delia, "one of my best friends in the whole world," on his 53rd birthday. And after the spirited crowd held their own, singing out the beginning of the song up to "that's alright with me," Bruce stepped back to the mic and said, "Me too!" No Patti tonight, but we hear she'll be back for Boston.

tix were stunning. on the suzy side, eye level, lower bowl, four rows up. id say probably 12-15 yards from bruce's mike at center stage. and when he'd stroll to our side it was a case of not bein able ta reach out and touch, but just about.
graced with more than the three pack to start the rollickin, suprised filled fun. reason>darkness>candy's room>she's the one!
prior to the show i was hoping for darkness, but gave it little chance. BAM.
after candy's room: was really looking forward to she's the one. nope. candy's room. perhaps a slight let down, but only to be lifted that much higher when the band started into a smokin she's the one!!!!!yea bay-be!

don't even need to say anything about sandy>east street shuffle. truely remarkable. was dreamin about sandy just prior to the show as the stage hands were tuning up a big ol' accordian just below us. but that's crazy talk. "he aint gonna drop sandy." not only does he, but sparks fly on east street??????? didn't even enter into the boy i'd love ta see file prior to the show.

general observations:
bruce sounded just a smidge hoarce but managed to hold his voice in control nonetheless.
band was, at times, fighting w/ bruce for tempo. especially noticable at the beginning of thunder road. seemd they really wanted to push things and he wanted to slow it all down.
that said, its clear that everyone is gettin a wee bit older. bruce was amazing. energy level was huge. shit, i'm just an audient and he had me whopped. mighty max was keepin stride, just beatin the heck out of it (listen for the "double shots" during east street!). little steven was hilarious, and clearly not up for maintaining presence toward the later end of the show. he was spending a ton of time impishly lingering in the shadows with his back to the audience, stealing time and almost laughingly bein a truant. at one point bruce busted him: gives a shout out for him to join him at the mike. he's the boss after all. like someone caught doin somethin he shouldn't little steven shoots, albeit a little off cue cause he was lingerin', to stage front and gets workin. smilin all the while. gary tallant has gotta be the luckiest man in show biz since ringo. clarence was on the opposite side of the stage, so couldn't get a very good read on him. keyboard plaers were workmanlike.

otherwise: efffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff. brought along the d-200 but decided to leave it in the hotel. tix was specific. NO CAMERAS. at the door, though, there was no pat down and cameras were everywhere, snappin flashes goin throughout. efffffffffffffffffffffffffff. given the quality of the seats i could have gotten some startling pix. a huge opportunity missed. ah well.

anyway. stay tuned. heading to lake placid tomorrow for world cup luge racing. and the camera will be in full effect. be prepared for some shots!

from the garden, think, to the summit is somewhere close to 19, if not 20.
but, after all its the filth, and ya gotta believe there's a tablespoon of intrinsic value there.

(an interlude.
so on what was my first attempt up, just about this time two years ago, i got stuck. stuck like a bug. 15 foot piece of vertical rock between slant rock and the range trail. got a good piece up and it was ice all around not providing any potential for upward mobility. shame on me, cause i chose a bad route. second attempt was foiled by the raging high waters experienced as a result of the biblical rains we were gettin last summer. even then, though, my concern was with the fear experienced as a stuck bug. third time's a charm and i rocked it. not without apprehension and not without fully overcoming my initial memories. hate that spot.)

as is true with any good hike decisions needed to be made.
arrived good and early. 4.5 wake up call so my gettin ta the garden at 6.75 allowed for good enough cush to enjoy negotiating through woods that, while past peak, nonetheless had a bunch still to show.

and to face my nemesis. apprehensions abound, especially given the fact that i'm finally starting to get some lifting done, heading above 4k and there's all sorts of ice and all sorts of frost making otherwise easy goin tricky.
finally: up we go. get stuck, find a hand hold, skirt around the ice, free and clear.

here's where the dax get interesting.
can often feel like that coon, squeezin through the trap. sure, cause the traps entrance lets ya squeeze yer fat ol body through the conical, tapered entrance, guess what? once in, that once wide entrance has now become oh so small. ( and in my mind there was going to be no friggin way i wanted to negotiate down my nemesis.) i'm some 9 miles out. bear in mind i haven't even seen the filth yet, but the exit strategy is to shoot the ridge over to marcy and then circle back around. there was going to be NO way i wanted basin> saddleback.
blue sky turned to grey.
gettin on lil' haystack. wind is fierce. sky getting darker. hustle on up ta the entre, boy!
filth.

and now it starts to snow.
basin > saddleback. no friggin way. in spite of, or cause of mikey and i's trek over that ground last year through the ice and elements.
hitting the ridge, grabbing marcy and the circling around. could do, but what of the dark clouds rolling in.

stuck worse than a bug on a rock.
stuck like a coon.
less an immediate concern than a logistical concern.
got three choices, with the most reasonable being to face and overcome the fear of my nemesis.

so i passed the connector to marcy, passed the connector to basin.

and not to punch a hole in things. approached my nemesis, looked at it askance. and discovered a bushwhackin route that would avoid the iced up rock altogether.
safe is safe.
think there just might be a lesson there, for which i hope you've indulged my excess.

get woken up at like 2.5 am last night by burlington's finest. "got a report that someone was exiting your appartment loaded down with boxes....."
i shrug it off as neighborly shennanigans, which, those who know my situation will certainly understand.

rose this morning, stumble to the shower and notice on the way that my bike is gone. yup. you guessed it. i had been struck by prowlers.
grabbed all my dvds. 50% of my cds. (mind you, thats alotta weight/material. the aforesaid mountain bike. stereo. wallet. and......
yup. my camera.

call the police.
call the bank in re. credit card.
interestingly enough got an immediate line on not only where charges were made, but when. a perfect blueprint.
call the po-lice. fill them in.
and you bet nearly all the stops frequented by the prowlers have video cameras rolling.

detective stops by csi grove. takes the info and he's off and running.
before he does go, though, i ask what i can possibly do to help matters. he mentions that it may help to type up a list of the discs and the vids that were boosted and drop them off at stores in town that sell used media.
first reaction was: yea. yea. yea. lotta good thats gonna do.

yet. having taken care of all else that seemed necessary (drivers license/bank/etc.) figured why not. i'll draw one up. so i start in and get a ways. get discouraged. start again. "is this gonna make a difference????????"
well i ended up cobling something together. drive to three locations and tell em the story.

and here's where it gets even more unreal.
not 5 minutes after having returned home i get a call from one of the stores.
"ya gotta come down. somebody just dropped a bunch of stuff and they are coming back in an hour."
head down. its my stuff. and for comic effect, you cant make it up, they brought the stuff down in my easily identifiable recycle bin!

sure enough: prowlers return, 5-0 do their thing. and we got two pigeons in a squad car.

sunday was golf at pine knob w/ eddie, and good rounds scored by all. more importantly a nice respite on some well sculpted landscape. dig the high country the most, but...

but wanted to get an idea as to what i managed over the weekend by creating topos of the route's for day 1 and 2.

remarkable if i do say so myself.
day 1 = full pack for the entirety.
day 2 = day provisions through carter dome > nothing but camera to height and back to carter > day provisions to abc > packing out with full load from perkins notch/abc to trailhead.

beyond the asthetics and in terms of the physical.
stats are as follows:
with full 45-50 pound pack on day 1. appx 10.25 miles. take a look at the first push. its only a 3500 foot peak, after all. but 3k of elevation gain in the first 4.2 miles?!?!? do the math. that, my friends is a worthy and just slog. casual ridge run and then down the other side. abc at roughly 10.3 miles.

day 2 stacks up as remarkable.
17 miles. 4.1k up, 6.2k down. with steeps going up carter and more significantly down from baldface. down from baldface was plain nasty.
timing was. left abc at roughly 7. outta the wood at roughly 6. 11 hours/17 miles through the rough.

not bad.

including the contingencies and vagaries of the hike, as well as another pix or 2.

broadly: some neat stuff.
day 1 was a trample across baldface, which was much more spectacular than you would imagine if just looking at elevation. without question the great surprise of the trip. was like a mini prezi run. offering some great landscape -- especially as you move toward south baldface from the slippery rock trail. it aint washington, but the same sweep of alpine garden and cairns spread along an exposed ridge.

once across down eagle crag and a hoof to perkins notch.

day 2 = seemingly off to an ill fated start. missed my trail and instead of taking the rainbow trail straight up to carter dome, ended up goin round robin hood's barn. wildcat river trail > carter notch hut (glad i missed my turn. wowsa! unbeleievable location) > moriah carter trail to carter and the to the real treat = height. height with 360 degrees of vids, starin straight at the prezies.
to say nothing of a plateau that you hit descendin the rainbow trail.

anyway:
i've already spent too little and too much time layin stuff out.
did want to send along this photo. taken between carter and height of a peregrine falcon. that's one cool bird. not the greatest shot, but then i had just spooked it from its perch, and whirlin around without a tripod. closest i've been to hunting critters.

nope. rather, i'm making an approach from the east, north chatham. gonna grab some altitude along an exposed ridge and then drop inta the mix. for those keepin score at home:

sunday = the carter cruise, with views of the prezies and back to perkins.
monday = bug out.

should be back in burlington by 6.
w/ a pocketful of pix and a rejuvinated sense of perspective.

so lets take stock.
couple weeks ago, the mighty t-racer dies on the road in ferrisburg, so i gotta do some quick shufflin, flat bed it back to burlington. etc. and then go through the logistics of purchasin a new ride.

last week i gotta get down to the plus hundred degree heat of aiken ta upgrade broke shit. server is cool, but the com interface ordered is the wrong part. what was a trip through friday turns into a trip through sunday with all sortsa tension.

at the airport find that itinerary aint gonna get me back due to airline issues. rejigger and off we go.
fail to make the connecting flight and spend the night in the airport shivering and grabbing an hour rest.
arrive in burlington monday am and luggage is nowhere ta be found. mind you i clothes are in the mix but who cares, my beloved gregory bag and camera -- with my wide angle -- are what's lost and of significance.
it's friday pm. still lost. with not one trace in any airline tracking system (?????)
me thinx. stolen.

so today, crusing ta fix somethin, spill coffee all over.
shirt and pants.
boy cant seem to catch a break. had to return home and change.

and there's a week and a bit for ya.
all told, on the upside, change is being forced.
new car.
upgrade on camera in the works.
gonna need new clothes.
gotta grab a new bag.
suppose it might just be a molting process.
a bit extreme fer my taste, but i'd be the first ta say it probably wouldn't have happened otherwise.

after slumbering in the lovely, hospitable, and frigid environs of laguardia airport last night, i finally arrive back and i aint got no check on bag.

idiot that i am, what's in da bag?
camera and 2 lenses.

dont have a good feeling at all.
flight i was on: nope
1'st flight thereafter: nope.
2'nd flight just touched down.

only thing i got going for me is the visual i got while at the counter, all the while sayin where's my bag, man.
appeared that they had their own share of issues on the other side of the line.
bags were everywhere.
if bags are everywhere, confusion abounds.

but here's what's odd.
getting bumped in columbia just felt weird. and just that. call it a gut.
hate ta be a paranoid, but, the whole evening seemed off half a step. and i suppose thats what flying's all about these days. at the complete mercy of what is an industry/corporation/complex.

i can only hope that good news awaits, and paranoia is seen fer what it is.

great way to spend the last stages of the oddessy. and my bet, it aint even close to being over. i'm given myself about a 20% chance of sleeping in my own bed tonight.

thinking about a run on the long trail. heading north cause south hikers, well, i'd shock the lot if i weighed in w/ an honest opinion about dem.
the hump through and over mansfield. what a crazy hike not to have done for a native. haven't specked it out at all. thinkin 3 days, so i'll need to take a monday off and start friday. more on that later.
and recognize that baxter state park hike is still well in the hopper. early fall?

dax ridge run. up and over pyramid>gothics and through armstrong and the two wolf jaws. lots a liftin.

they do make ya work. to draw a distinction with the prezies. the dax are rough and long. at least if approached as day hikes. logged like 14 miles w/ 4 peaks. and finished physically spent. there is just no way to sanely accomplish the type of work in the prezies. when all was said and done i finished in 7 hours. w/ no shortage of steeps (obviously: 4 peaks = cul/steep up/steep down/cul/ repeat.) dont get me wrong, prezies beat ya up but good, but the radical difficulty encountered necessarily limits the potential milage logged.

anyway: i'll post further details and the signature pix soon. for now i gotta regroup...

after tearin' off some spectacular real estate in the whites.

camped near mitzpa hut. in the driving rain.
saturday, through unsettled, variable whether, Pierce, Eisenhower, Franklin, Monroe, and then to the top of Washington we go. down tucks, a right at tucks crossover, and back up and over to ABC1, which = .5 miles or so down the ammonussuc ravine trail. sunset with visability that stretched to the greenies. the hump's profile was unmistakable and follow that all the way through mansfield, hor, and finally jay and beyond: canada.

great ridge runnin through the course of the day with required heavy lifting included in the mix, by way of course!

today. a good start and back to crawford notch w/ return trips to both eisenhower and pierce (cause when passin through saturday there was 0% vids). franklin, at 5k, happened to be on the way.

highlights.
saturday decided to go down washington via tucks ravine through a boulder field. then the tucks crossover, back to lake of the clouds all ta get to ABC1. insane. broad scope of alpine terrain with lines of cairns visable that stretched along visable horizon as the sun was goin down. feelin like the wagon train! coverin ground.

today. catching up with what we missed. looking back toward washington and seeing it framed between franklin and monroe.

the AT, circumventing monroe (cause up and over we've been a couple times), with some crazy views both north and south.

haven't yet taken enough time to go through the pix. but upon first scan, there are more than a few. figured, though, i'd show y'all the visable from ABC1 from last night.

everyone be good. recognize there's wonders apleanty out there!
they aren't all in the highcountry, but thats where i choose ta throw my line.....

Vermont's Springfield picked as official hometown of 'The Simpsons'

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — It's Duff time in Springfield, Vt., which on Tuesday was proclaimed the official hometown of TV's favorite dysfunctional family, the Simpsons.

The southeastern Vermont community beat out 13 other Springfields for the honor, which includes hosting the premiere of The Simpsons Movie on July 26th.

20th Century Fox ran an online poll on the USA Today Web site inviting people to vote for their favorite among 14 videos submitted by the competing Springfields.

Springfield, Vt., came late to the competition, getting in after the head of the local Chamber of Commerce saw a news report on it and asked to be involved.

"We're so excited," said Patricia Chaffee, vice president of the Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce. "We came in at the last minute, and for us to win, we feel like the underdogs, which makes this so big and so great for us."

The town of 9,300 was the smallest in population among the communities entered. It put together a video showing a local TV personality playing Homer Simpson and chasing a giant, pink doughnut through the town.

Gov. Jim Douglas issued a statement congratulating the town.

"This is an exciting, exhilarating moment for Vermonters," he said. "Perhaps more importantly, it proves there's really nothing a giant doughnut can't do. To all the other Springfields, I say "Don't have a cow, man."

According to USA Today, the 13 other Springfields that participated in the contest will be given small screenings of their own the night before the movie opens nationwide July 27.

couldn't help but question my foots ability. really, the first day it had felt near ok was thursday. not all that sure it would have been wise to push things to the extent that would have been called for.
stack that up w/ what was a pretty sketchy weather report for the weekend.
what ya get is an audible right before the richmond exit. the hump it is.
we'll test the foot out in a home game.

good news and bad.
tweeked my foot while over in whites. started ta notice it on the final, 3'rd day. must've been the endless pile of rock leading to the summit of that bastard adams.

and its been nagging since. w/ saturday being the worst. could put no pressure at all on it.
so taday, off to the md.s we go. guess i'm lookin at either a hairline fracture or just some twisted up liggies. with the liggies lookin more like the root cause. keep 'er iced 3 times a day and get all hopped up on advil 3xperday.
should be better in appx a week.

an interlude from the story of our interpid, prezi travellers.

spent last night in my beloved dax. never thought i'd say it, but subsequent to the trip to the whites, dem dax got teeth, but there is a certain dense, earthy quality to bein' in the park. the prezies are altogether alien/otherworldly/hostile.

on a side note: spillin out into the loj parking lot i met the wife of randall peeters. google it. dudes been around, including hitting the highest on the continents. 4 years ago successfully summited everest, while his climbing partner was left behind. k2 done once but yet another trip planned for next year. a sweet woman and a very interesting conversation to say the least....

spent a little time on the hill.

should be apparent from the preceding photos that we were a party of 5. myself, eddie, mikey, and two of mikey's buds: dustin and chris. ages ranging from 21 to 50. which made for an interesting and entertaining mix.

drove out w/ eddie and mikey to north conway for arrival around 7'ish. ditka. hooked up w/ dustin, hooked up with chris. introductions and 8 oz. burgers.

DAY 1: should have been a piece of cake. some 4.5 miles up boot spur to lake of the clouds. turned into, without question the fiercest 4.5 i've done. while down at pinkham someone noticed that the lion's share of hikers were all carrying day packs. hmmmmmm. i musta had 30-35 lbs. on my back and mikey had 3 lbs. a cheeze alone. negotiating through some steep terrain, coping with an increasingly wet day, we finally made the hut, some 5 hours later. navigating our first boulder garden in wet/nasty conditions.

outta the box the initial plan was to bag monroe/franklin/ike on day 1 (what's 10 or so miles???!!!???) head back to lake of the clouds, to then find a spot to camp. given whether conditions and fatigue, not a bloody chance.

a decision had to be made.

choice arrived at was to bag madison from lake of the clouds while leaving packs behind, instead of finding a site below tree line, establishing camp, and running back up. ike and franklin were necessarily out of the question.
helga/sven/morrocan bisque/troop 9/a respite from the rain at the hut. mikey/dustin/chris: necessarily safe.
hike up monroe, liberated from weight, was quick. a spooky, aquariuym type feel. visability was limited to , what, 40 yards or so. and down.

faced with finding a suitable place to establish camp, we hustled down the ammonoosuc trail. Dustin scores ABC1. could we have slept in a more beautiful spot than anyone on the east coast that night? inspite of intermitant rain? i'd say so. magical.

but an interesting read that seemed an eerie representation of my own.

3 seemingly disparate books.
on the cover = ian mcewann's new novel. wow. that's some exciting stuff. since ol' matt turned me on to cement garden i've been a fan.
and then there's a review of a bio of joe strummer. only band that matters. and within the context of the jfk show. there's a quote that runs something along the line of : we dont wanna turn into the who. they walked off that afternoon. after having been the target of sneakers , fruit, etc.
finally, a book on mushrooms. while never taken personally, going to dead shows, etc. it was certainly part of an alternative culture to which i belonged.

tigers loose 3 to the tribe?!? all last year they seemed to have a difficult time stepping up and playing big. sure they won a ton of games, and they look like they are on course this year to win a bunch as well, but...
struggles this year against the bosox and now the tribe.
as ol' rick flair used ta say: to be the man, ya gotta beat the man. and they got schooled this weekend.

don delillo has got a new novel! grabbed it yesterday, along w/ a book on marinades etc. funny that the color scheme used echoes my own for my jerky. jerky.

and in perhaps one of the more wonderous moments i've had in quite a bit:
i'm cruisin through the grocery after playin golf and i see a 3 year old excitedly swinging a box of animal crackers. i may be gettin old, but wow. i somehow managed to dial in to the same joy crusing the aisles of the grand union, in the ethan allen shopping center.

meanwhile: poor mole man has got troubles of his own! it does suck when yer danger signal goes off!

in cooking newz: just removed a slab of belly that i cured last weekend (which sat for a seven day siesta in the fridge absorbing), outta the oven after cookin ta 150. now its ready ta eat.

and today went ta wall-mart and grabbed me a dehydrator. cause i wanna make some jerky. jerky.wall-mart's not forrest hills, but i plunkled da loot down anyway and got me a jerky maker. meat's marinating in the fridge as we speak tomorrow i'll accomplish.

all as a lead in to the hike in the prezi's.

more significantly. grabbed a tent and a stove yesterday at ems.

gettin fired up.

and this after having recently found the epic show in montreal posted.

what to say.
tigers win during the day, with a set against the sox on the horizon.
mags, at this pointat least, is lookin like mags-friggin-mvp. cause he keeps managin to knock the ball where they aint and drivin' runners xcross the plate. got another couple rbi's today.
